“Midnight Society: the Black Lake is my take on classic pulp stories of adventurers, mystery men and women, pseudo-science, spies, and monsters—all rolled together and set in the modern era. Each issue is a journey that will lead the reader to moments that crackle with wonder, suspense, mystery, and all-out action. My goal in creating this series was to show the reader things they truly haven’t seen before, while embracing the classic adventure tropes of comics, novels and films that constantly fuel my imagination. MS:TBL aims to give our audience a unique experience, one that will keep them returning to the book again and again to discover new things hidden in its pages. “Working on Midnight Society, I found that knowing the characters in this story were my own, they spoke to me differently than the many franchised, company-owned characters that I’ve worked with over the years. I have the first word in the characters’ destinies, and I can hear their voices with a truer clarity–they’re coming from me, and not through a filter of hundreds of adventures told over many years by other people. Creator-owned comics offer a kind of freedom of imagination I’ve never experienced before. “I began my career in comics working with Dark Horse on Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron. To bring my first creator-owned project to Dark Horse Comics is a great home-coming for me. Especially given the opportunity to work with my editor, Philip Simon, who I had the good fortune of working with in the early days of my career. I’m thrilled and honored to join Dark Horse’s line of genre bending horror/adventure books like Hellboy, BPRD, The Goon, and so many more, which have all influenced my work heavily over the years.”
